Brain Power: How it impacts performance in effective leadership

While researching for some potential development opportunities for one of my clients, I came across this video.  The discussion between Daniel Goleman (author of Emotional Intelligence) and Daniel Siegel (clinical psychiatrist at UCLA) focuses on why it is important for leaders to understand the science of how our brains work.

We all know and recognise that leadership is both an art and a science, but few of us spend the time in understanding how the science works.  A leader is responsible for piloting the company to success and as such must create an environment that promotes collaboration, camaraderie and a strong desire to succeed.

Leaders must inspire and empower their employees and support their ongoing development and commitment and need to understand their own mindset to ensure they are able to deliver on these expectations.  In fact, I believe that the mindset of the leader and all within the organisation are key factors in the development of a positive culture and behaviours within an organisation.

Understanding how your brain works is a crucial skill for all leaders and gives you a new perspective on how your behaviours, actions and words can lead to greater efficacy within the organisation.

I would even go on to say that understanding the neuroscience of adult learning and feedback are key to being a great leader as it will give you a better awareness of why your employees make the decisions they do and how you can better harness their energies and support their success.
